The birth of Ava DuVernay took place on the 24th day of August on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay discovered her love for the arts from the aunt Denise. Her aunt was a nurse and worked night shifts so that she could dedicate her time to art literature and theatre. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 movie West Side Story after her aunt showed the film to DuVernay. DuVernay learned by example that art could be an instrument for social activism. DuVernay had a mother who was aware of her social circle and showed her how to make use of the arts as a way to express herself. DuVernay was a child with her family in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical civil rights marches through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was strongly influenced by her time in Selma and decided to make the documentary of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay completed her studies at Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She attended University of California Los Angeles for a degree in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. As an intern, she worked for CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage in the house that belonged to a member of the jury. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalism tasks and decided to move into the field of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicity specialist in a small production studio right out of school. Her private PR company, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999.
